SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Cabinet on Thursday announced 30% amnesty to tax defaulters prior to the GST regime. This is seen as a fiscal measure to bail out the State exchequer which has hit a new low since the the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking to newsmen soon after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that the amnesty will be in the form of ordinance.There will be a penalty clause if the defaulters failed to comply within the six months moratorium.

There are around 85 tax violators and the expected amount to be retrieved is RS 180 crores. The Chief Minister has urged those violators to cooperate since proceedings will be followed against the violators.
