Shillong: High-power pumps of the Kirloskar Brothers Limited and Coal India Limited on Sunday could not be used to pump out water from the illegal coal mine in Ksan village, East Jaintia Hills district due certain technical snags.
“Pump of the Kirloskar Bothers Limited was stopped for the time being due to some technical problem. The Coal India Limited pumps also had a technical problem and the pump will be restored,” Spokesperson of the rescue operation R Susngi said.
It may be mentioned that on Saturday, the pump of the Kirloskar Brothers Limited was used for an hour to de-water from the main shaft where the miners are trapped. Another problem faced by the rescuers was that even after pumps of the Odisha Fire Service was used to pump out water from two adjacent mines nearby the flooded coal shaft, the water level again increased.
According to the Spokesperson of the rescue operation the Odisha Fire service operated their two pumps today for 7 hours and 6.30 hours respectively from two nearby shafts.
Susngi said that the pumps started pumping water from 10 am and another pump was started at 10:30 am respectively.
“The operation closed at 5 pm the water from both the shaft reduced by 4 feet but due to heavy seepage from other shaft/river, the water level increased,” he said.
Susngi informed that as a whole on Sunday only 2 feet water has so far been reduced and a total of 1215000 liters of water so far has been pumped out from both the shafts. The Odisha Fire Service was using 25 HP pumps which are not powerful enough compared to the pumps of the Kirloskar Brothers Limited and Coal India Limited.
