SHILLONG: Residents of Shillong were shocked afer an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded on Tuesday at Laitumkhrah market, injuring two people.

According to police, the incident happened at around 1.30 pm and both the injured were shifted to a city hospital to receive treatment. The IED exploded near a shop located in a parking lot at Laitumkhrah market.

In this connection, Superintendent of Police East Khasi Hills Sylvester Nongtnger informed that after learning of the incident, bomb squad, crime scene unit and dog squad were sent to the location to collection evidences. "During the preliminary investigation, it is ascertained that the blast occurred due to IED," Nongtnger said.

The SP further informed that two persons sustained minor injuries in the incident. Further, the wall of the shop and window glasses of the adjacent building got damaged. A case has been registered at Laitumkhrah police station.

Meanwhile, local MLA of the area, Ampareen Lyngdoh has condemned the incident which took place in the heart of Shillong. "The use of violence can never be justified and the Meghalaya Police must investigate the incident and arrest those who are responsible for this," she said.
