'U Kiang Nangbah Award-2020' given away in Shillong

In commemoration of the 158th death anniversary of legendary freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah, the National People's Youth Front (NPYF), Meghalaya of the National People's Party (NPP) hosted an award ceremony to felicitate three prominent citizens and a society, at Jowai on Wednesday.

SHILLONG : In commemoration of the 158th death anniversary of legendary freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah, the National People's Youth Front (NPYF), Meghalaya of the National People's Party (NPP) hosted an award ceremony to felicitate three prominent citizens and a society, at Jowai on Wednesday.

The purpose of these awards is to give due recognition and support to people of eminence, whose call to serve their fellow human beings and society at large is not only commendable but also inspirational.

The awardees are: 'Socio-Cultural Award' to the 'Kiang NangbahIasiat Khnam Memorial Society' for its outstanding social dervice and dedication; Award on Fine Arts to Wanhi- I Challam for his dedication and contribution to Art & Culture in the State; Award on Sports & Youth Affairs to two personalities, namely Hame Shaniah Suiam for the numerous international achievements in kickboxing and his contribution to the sport in the State; and Dauniwanchwa Phawa for his dedication and contribution to the Sports sector in the State.

By honouring the four achievers with these awards, NPYF's intention is to encourage the awardees to be better social catalysts in their respective areas. Addressing the gathering, JHADCCEM Thombor Shiwat said, "It was because of our own people that U Kiang Nangbah was arrested and hanged. We should do away with all the malice and jealousy. Instead, we should help each other to grow.''

Congratulating the awardees, Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla encouraged them to strive to achieve many more achievements. Narrating the background as to how U Kiang Nangbah — born to a poor family in Tpeppale with no royal background — became a great leader and resisted tyranny of the Britishers. He reminded the gathering that U woh Kiang Nangbah's prophecy came true as he was hanging from the noose, he shouted that if on his last breath his head turns towards the east, the Jaintia Kingdom shall regain its Independence within a span of 100 years which indeed it did. Among the other dignitaries present on the occasion were the national working president of NPYF Nickey Nongkhlaw; Jowai North MDC Bright Star Chyrmang; and nominated MDC of JHADC Octomewot Lamin.
