SHILLONG: The vote share of UDP (United Democratic Party) across the 18 Constituencies of the just concluded GHADC (Garo Hills Autonomous District Council) election, where it had fielded candidates, have increased considerably.

This was claimed by UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh adding that this is depite the fact that the party did not secure any seat this time in the GHADC polls.

"The UDP did well in six to seven constituencies. Since for a very long time the UDP has had no MLAs or MDCs from the Garo Hills sector, there is no organisation of the UDP at the grassroots level," added Mawthoh here on Sunday.

He also said that in a review meeting held at Tura, leaders are of the view that UDP will do well in future with proactive role and frequent visitations from State leaders.

"Many prominent leaders from Garo hills from different political parties have come forward to strengthen the party's organisation in the Garo Hills. They felt that the party will do well in the Assembly elections 2023," he pointed out.

The former MLA also said that the people of Garo Hills responded positively this time and recalled the time when Khasis, Jaintias and Garos fought together for the Statehood under the banner of the regional party APHLC (All Parties Hill Leaders Conference) which is the UDP today.

Mawthoh also pointed out that this time UDP came second from Gusuapara constituency with 4286 votes, from Tura UDP secured 4272 votes, from Damas 5868, from Darugre 4448, from Dengnapara 2729, Wajesik 2315 and so on.

"Having secured sizeable votes this time and after striking a chord with the people in the Garo Hills, the UDP is confident that it will perform better in 2023 Assembly elections," he concluded.
