SHILLONG: Some people of Meghalaya are known to have some really funky names and some really creative and surprising names have come to notice ahead of the state assembly polls in Meghalaya. People are used to giving their children English words as names without even knowing their meanings.
Keeping with that tradition, Maradona, Romario and Pele had to select among Balajied from UDP, Grace Mary Kharpuri of NPP and Arena Hynniewta of BJP. Thailand, Kashmir, Sweden and Tibet also took part in the assembly polls of Meghalaya from Umniuh Tmar Elaka which comes in the Shella constituency of the East Khasi Hills District.
Playness, Arena, Wellborn and Grace are also some of the voters along with Assembly Rynga, Meghalaya Khongtim, Sister Promiseland, Holyland Dkhar and Jerusalem Kheiwtam. Even the days of Thursday and Sunday could not escape the list and so did some of the Indian states including Tripura and Goa.
The polling station is located near the international border with Bangladesh and has a very short list of voters that includes 749 male and 785 female voters. It has a record number of peculiar names registered as per the records of the Election Commission.
26-year-old Dispur and Atlanta and 76-year-old Address were eagerly supporting Grace Mary and Arena in the elections. The names of Babylon, City, Village and Agenda also appear on the list along with Pacific and Continent.
The 2018 electoral roll included a 30-year-old Class XII-passed woman whose mother 'Sweater' named her 'I Have Been Delivered'. Three Diengdoh sisters - Request, Loveliness and Happiness were named by their mother 'Shuki', a Khasi word for a chair.
Some other interesting names include Table, Remote, Venus, Jupiter, Atlas, Navy, Fourteen, Sunday and every day. Some vegetables including Tyrso (mustard) and Muli (radish) also could not escape this list of names.
The list of candidates is also not void of such unique names. Nehru Suting, Sunmoon Marak, Sunshine Makri and Moonlight will also have to accept the decisions of the public along with Forcaster Nongrang, Generous Paslein and Comingone
Firstborn Manner, Counselor Mukhim, Highlander, Sounder, Process and Brightstarwell are also contesting from multiple constituencies and so are Fourteenson, Polestar Nongsiej, Ian Botham K Sangma and Novembirth Ch Marak.
