AIZAWL: Elections for the Lunglei Municipal Council are scheduled to be organised at the end of the month and a good number of candidates will be appearing for the polls.

The Lunglei Municipal Council polls will be organised to select the representatives for a total of 11 seats. Out of them, four are reserved for female candidates. Nearly 40000 voters are expected to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming elections for the local administrative body.

The voting process will be conducted on March 29 from 7 AM to 4 PM. The counting process for the same will be conducted on April 3.

An official in charge of the voting process mentioned that a total of 42 candidates will be appearing for this voting process. The ruling party of the state Mizo National Front and the opposition party Zoram People’s Movement have fielded their candidates for all eleven seats of the Lunglei Municipal Council Polls. The Indian National Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party have decided to launch eleven and nine candidates respectively.

The Lunglei Municipal Council was created by the Zoramthanga-led Mizo National Front in the year 2022. It is the second municipality in the northeastern state of Mizoram after the Aizawl Municipal Corporation.

Meanwhile in the state of Nagaland, the president of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee wrote to Neiphiu Rio about the idea of holding a non-partisan election for the local urban bodies. He mentioned that it is an inherent custom in Nagaland to be followed in the village council elections.

He also mentioned that the upcoming elections will take place in 416 wards across the state. Even if three candidates appear for each ward on average, this election will impact 1200 candidates financially leading to possible economic chaos and corruption at the grassroots levels.
