Guwahati: An earthquake of 5.3 magnitude on the Richter scale hit the state of Mizoram at 4:10 am in the morning today, affecting the Northeast Indian region as well as the neighbouring states of Myanmar and Bangladesh.
The depth of the quake was 20 km while the coordinates of the epicentre are 23.22 (latitude) and 93.24 (longitude).
"Earthquake of magnitude:5.3; Occurred on 22-06-2020, 04:10:52 IST; Lat: 23.22 and Long: 93.24; Depth: 20 Km; Location: 27 km SSW of Champhai, Mizoram, India," the National Centre for Seismology tweeted.
Taking to twitter moments earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote that he had spoken to Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga on the situation in the wake of the tremors, "and had assured all possible help from the Centre.
Taking cognizance, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga responded with the words, "Thank you Shri Narendra Modiji. Risk assessment underway. The people of Mizoram are grateful for your assurance", he said.
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also spoken to Zoramthanga in the aftermath of the earthquake. "I have spoken to Shri Zoramthanga ji, Chief Minister of Mizoram, to review the situation after the earthquake tremors in the state. I assured him all possible support from the central government. Praying for everyone's safety and well-being", Shah tweeted.
It needs mention here that a day earlier, neighbouring Manipur was jolted by a 5.1 magnitude quake at 4:16 pm, with the epicentre 9 km from Ngopa in Mizoram.
