Areca nuts, heroin worth crores seized in Mizoram

AIZAWL: In yet another success in its crusade against smuggling activities, a joint operation of the Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles, under the aegis of Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), and the Custom Preventive Force, Champhai District recovered 235 bags of areca nuts in the area of Rauntlang on March 23. The operation was carried out based on specific information.

The approximate market value of the recovered areca nuts is Rs 52,64,000. The Customs Preventive Customs Preventive Force Champhai District seized the contraband items.

HEROIN RECOVERED: A joint operation of the Aizawl Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles, under the aegis of Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), and the Excise & Narcotics Department recovered 324 gram of heroin (No-4) from the area of Bukpui, Kolasib in Mizoram on March 20.

The operation was carried out based on specific information. The approximate market value of the seized item is Rs 1,45,80,000. The Excise & Narcotics Department has seized the contraband item, and also detained two individuals.

The ongoing smuggling of drugs is a major cause of concern for Mizoram, especially along the India-Myanmar Border. Assam Rifles, rightly christened as the 'Sentinels of Northeast' have continued their efforts against the smuggling activities in Mizoram, stated a release.
