AIZAWL: The Lunglei Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles conducted a Wreath Laying Ceremony at Lunglei on Sunday to pay tribute to Nursing Assistant Soorya Nath Ram, a braveheart who sacrificed his life in a fire fight with terrorists during 'Operation Rakshak' at Jammu & Kashmir on November 13, 1995.
On that day in 1995, one Junior Commissioned Officer and 20 other ranks of 3 (NH) Assam Rifles Battalion were detailed for patrolling in the Kabchirwan area of Jammu & Kashmir. The patrolling party suddenly came under heavy fire of militants. Nursing Assistant Soorya Nath Ram, showing presence of mind, moved across in a flash and showing great determination dashed towards the firing militant. During the firefight, Nursing Assistant Soorya Nath Ram sustained gunshot wounds and succumbed to his injuries, thereby laying down his life in supreme sacrifice for the nation.
Officiating Commandant 3 (NH) Bn Assam Rifles, while laying the wreath on Sunday, highlighted the fact that gallant actions by soldiers of the battalion have always been a motivating factor for the battalion to carryout relentless operations against anti-national elements, stated a press release.
Lunglei Battalion has been forthcoming in conducting events of national significance like honouring martyrs, Independence Day, Kargil Diwas, which helps kindle the spirit of nationalism and sacrifice for the nation amongst the local population.
STUDY TOUR: Meanwhile, according to another press release, 23 Sector Assam Rifles organized a flagging off ceremony of a study tour for 'Friends of Children Orphanage', Chatlang, by Brigadier Digvijay Singh, SM, DIG 23 Sector Assam Rifles wherein these children who rarely get opportunity to go out of Mizoram were sent on a tour to Shillong and Cherrapunji.
During the tour the children will also visit the Assam Rifles Headquarters in Shillong and meet the Director General Assam Rifles. These children will enact some stage performances in Assam Rifles Headquarters so as to spread message of peaceful coexistence of Northeastern tribes and also display the rich and colourful, cultural heritage of Mizoram.
