AIZAWL: In
more successes in its crusade against smuggling activities, a joint team of the
Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles — under the aegis of Headquarters
Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) — and the Customs Preventive Force of
Champhai district of Mizoram recovered 100 cases of foreign-origin smuggled
cigarettes in the Champhai area and also 563 bags bags of areca nuts in the
Rauntlang area on March 9.
The operation against the smuggled ciagrettes was carried out based on specific information from 20 FIT (DGARFIU). The approximate market value of the recovered items is Rs 1,30,00,000. The Champhai Customs Department seized the contraband items, stated a release.
ARECA NUTS RECOVERED: The operation against the consignments of
areca nuts was carried out based on specific information. The approximate value
of the recovered areca nuts is Rs 1,26,11,200. The Customs department of
Champhai District seized the contraband items.
The ongoing smuggling of drugs and various other items is a major cause of concern for Mizoram, and also along the India-Myanmar border. The Assam Rifles, also christened the 'Sentinels of Northeast' have continued their efforts against the smuggling activities in Mizoram, stated a release.
