AIZAWL: In yet another success in its crusade against smuggling activities, the Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), recovered 2,250 kg of areca nut worth Rs 9,51,750 from Hmunhmeltha along the Indo-Myanmar border in the Champhai district on Friday.
Disclosing this, a press release stated that the operation was carried out by a joint team of 8 Assam Rifles, 2 Assam Rifles and representatives of the Customs Department, Champhai, based on specific information.
The Customs Department seized the contraband items for further legal proceedings. Ongoing smuggling of areca nut is a major cause of concern for the State of Mizoram, especially along the Indo-Myanmar border. Assam Rifles, rightly christened as the 'Sentinels of Northeast' have continued their efforts against the smuggling activities in Mizoram.
Meanwhile, according to another press release, Aizawl Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), conducted a lecture on 'Ayushman Bharat Diwas' at Zokhawsang, New Vaikhawtlang, Hnahlan, Mimbung, Kawlbem and Ngopa villages on Saturday. A total of 64 local residents and 20 Assam Rifles personnel attended the event.
