Covid-19 in Mizoram: Tally crosses century-mark with 9 more cases; total 102

Guwahati: 9 more persons have tested positive for the Covid-19 in Mizoram, taking the total number of cases in the Northeast Indian state into the triple digits, with 102 cases. A single patient has been released so far after undergoing treatment at the Zoram Medical College (ZMC) at Falkawn.

According to the Mizoram Government, 135 samples were tested yesterday out of which nine (2 males and 7 females) tested positive. While 8 of these patients are from the state's commercial hub of Aizawl, a single patient belongs to Mamit district. According to officials, 8 patients were undergoing quarantine in facility, and 1 was quarantined at home. Additionally, 8 patients are asymptomatic, while only 1 is showing symptoms of the respiratory disease.

It needs mention here that the cases have skyrocketed in Mizoram after the influx of migrants who were stranded in other states amid the lockdown. According to the Mizoram Government figures, Lunglei district, with 45 cases, is the hardest-hit district in the state.

Meanwhile, Mizoram has announced a complete lockdown in the state that came into effect on June 9 to mitigate the spread of the pathogen. The move, that was announced after a consultative meeting chaired by the Chief Minister Zoramthanga, comes as other states opened malls, restaurants, and places of worship after two months as part of the Central Government's 'Unlock-1' guidelines, expected to return life to normal in a "phased" manner.

"Consultative meeting chaired by CM decides to impose 2 weeks total lockdown of the state w.e.f 00:00 hours of 9th June 2020 in view of the prevailing situation. Lockdown Guidelines will be notified shortly," Mizoram's Directorate of Information and Public Relations tweeted.

Subsequently, it was notified that the Mizoram Government has decided to extend the quarantine period from 14 to 21 days. In another move meant to contain the outbreak, the Lengpui Airport in Mizoram's capital city Aizawl will be closed from 5:00 pm on June 10 till further notice, the Mizoram Government announced on Tuesday. This is in accordance with the total lockdown guidelines notified late last night by the Government.
