MIZORAM: A minor earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale hit Mizoram's border district of Champhai at midnight today.

The quake occurred 50 km east of the Champhai district.

The NCS tweeted, "Earthquake of Magnitude:4.0, Occurred on 07-09-2022, 00:50:55 IST, Lat: 23.41 & Long: 93.82, Depth: 13 Km ,Location: 50km E of Champhai, Mizoram, India."

Notably, China's Sichuan province was hit by a 6.7 magnitude earthquake on Monday that killed more than 65 people. The death toll is on the rise and as per fresh reports, it has risen to 74.

The unofficial sources claim that the death toll may be even more than reported.

Last Week, The Andaman and Nicobar Islands also was jolted by a quake which was measured at 4.9 on the Richter scale. The epicentre of the earthquake was 108 Kilometers in the North-Northeast (NNE) of Diglipur in Andaman and Nicobar island and the depth of around 10 kilometres. No casualties were reported from the quake.

North-east India is especially vulnerable to earthquakes as it lies in the Zone or Belt 5 in the Earthquake Zonation map. Zone 5 is regarded as the most vulnerable area to earthquakes as the area has witnessed large tremors in the past. Assam in particular faced earthquakes of magnitude 8.3 and 8.6 in 1897 and 1950 respectively.

More recently Assam faced a 6.4 magnitude earthquake last year in April which caused widespread damage across the state.
