Foreign cigarettes worth more than Rs 19 lakh recovered in Mizoram

CHAMPHAI: In yet another success in its crusade against smuggling activities, the Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles — under the aegis of Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) — recovered 15 cases of foreign cigarettes in the local market here on September 15.

Based on specific information, the operation was carried out by a joint team of the Assam Rifles and the Customs Department, Champhai.

The approximate market value of the seized illegal items is Rs 19,50,000. The Customs Department has started further legal proceedings.

The ongoing smuggling of drugs is a major cause of concern for Mizoram, especially along the India-Myanmar Border.

The Assam Rifles, rightly christened as the 'Sentinels of Northeast', have continued their efforts against the smuggling activities in Mizoram, stated a press release.
