AIZAWL: The state government of Mizoram has appointed Madhup Vyas as the Chief Electoral Officer of the state. The announcement from the state government came on Friday.

Madhup Vyas is an Indian Administrative Officer of the 2000 batch for the Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram and Union Territories Cadre. He was earlier posted as the secretary to the Mizoram Government in charge of the elections department mentioned an official with the Mizoram Government.

Notably, the position had been empty for more than a year since it was vacated in April of 2022. Also, the state goes to an election later this year for the 40-seater Mizoram state assembly. Dates for the assembly polls in Mizoram have not been declared yet.

The Mizo National Front with 28 members is in power in the state. It is also a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led North East Democratic Alliance in the Northeast and the National Democratic Alliance in the Centre. Zoram People’s Movement, with a total of six members in the house, forms the main opposition party. Congress has five elected representatives while Bharatiya Janata Party has one.

While the political situation in the state has not geared up for the upcoming elections as of now, the conditions in the neighbouring state of Manipur are expected to be a key agenda for the upcoming elections.

The unrest started with the granting of Scheduled Tribe status to a particular community that has a majority in the state which was opposed by another protected community of the state. The conflict took a very ugly turn with fights and arson reported at multiple locations and the Army had to be called to bring the situation under control.

Mizoram is turning into a safe haven for refugees, with the number of people seeking shelter in the state from violence-hit Manipur reaching nearly 600 on Sunday. Temporary camps in several villages are lodging a majority of the displaced people, while others are being accommodated by their local relatives.
