AIZAWL : 74 families of Kuki-Chin refugees from Bangladesh will be relocated in four villages of Mizoram, on 12th of December, Monday. These refugees has been residing under the shelter in a village on the Mizoram-Bangladesh-Myanmar border, Lawngtlai district ever since they entered the state.
In the first phase, 74 families will be relocated in four nearby villages, stated deputy commissioner Marylin Rualzakhumi, in a meeting held by Lawngtlai district disaster management authority.
The refugees are allocated in Tuithumhnar village where 30 families will be shifting, 20 families are being relocated to Vathuampui village, 14 to Chamdur and 10 families in Mautlang village. The entire process of shifting and relocation is expected to be over by Tuesday.
After the violent fights between the Bangladeshi army and Kuki-Chin National army, a total of 310 families entered Mizoram from Chittagong Hill Tracts. It was a result of the intensive operation by Bangladeshi security forces against militants.
The Border Security Force ( BSF ) has undertaken the responsibility of transportation for these families. The village council presidents ( VCPs ) and the Young Lai Association (YLAs) are advised to welcome the refugees in the four assigned village. Apart from this, the VCPs and YLAs of the villages will form committees among the people on Bangladeshi asylum seekers.
The prime objective behind this step is to tackle arrangements and relief works. Apart from 10 refugee families that would relocate to Mautlang village in Lunglei district, the others will shift to three villages that comes under the Lai Autonomous District Council.
As per sources, the refugees mainly included women, children and elderly people who got away from Cheihkhiang and the adjacent villages in Bangladesh. The local residents assisted these refugees with food and also accommodated them in primary schools and church. The refugees entered the state in the month of November 2022.
