Mizoram: Aizawl To Become 4th State Capital In North East To Have Rail Connectivity Next Year

A new Broad Gauge railway line is currently under construction from Bairabi of Assam’s Hailakandi district to Sairang of Mizoram’s Aizawl district covering 52 km.

Aizawl: In a recent development in the railway sector of the northeastern region, the capital city of Mizoram, Aizawl is all set to get railway connectivity in the upcoming year.

With this major railway project, Aizawl will become the fourth state capital in the northeast to have a rail link that is currently under construction.

On Sunday 27 March officials informed us about the upcoming railway network in Aizawl as the NFR (National Frontier Railway) is laying BG (Broad Gauge) track up to Sairang town of Mizoram which is about 20 kilometres from Aizawl.

The National Frontier Railway officials stated that the Broad Gauge line is being laid in the Bairabi area of the Hailakandi district of Assam to the Aizawl's Sairang area covering a 52-kilometre distance.

As informed by the officials, this rail project has been proposed with the cost of Rupees 6,547 crore and is expected to be operational from next year.

The construction work will be completed on November 2023 and at present, 70 per cent of work on the BG line from Bairabi- Sairang is already done.

The railway line will consist of 4 stations at Kawnpui, Hortoki, Mualkang and Sairang (terminal station). There will be 55 big bridges, 32 tunnels with a length of 12.63 km and 87 small bridges.

The state government along with railway authorities and Mizoram Chief Secretary Renu Sharma had visited the construction sites near Bairabi to Sairang BG railway line for inspection of the ongoing civil works.

The Executive Engineer of Construction Malay Baruah and Deputy Chief Engineer of NFR has explained about the progress of the construction work in brief to the Chief Secretary.

State Chief Secretary Renu Sharma said that this railway project of Bairabi-Sairang is a national project of importance.

Once the railway network is ready for functioning it will not just be beneficial for Mizoram but also bring economic benefits to the entire nation added the chief secretary.

In 2008-2009 the central government had approved the BG line from Bairabi to Sairang at a starting cost of Rupees 2,384.34 crore and in 2015 the work on the project started.

It may be mentioned that the other three state capital in the northeast to have rail connectivity are Agartala (Tripura), Guwahati (Assam) and Naharlugam (Arunachal Pradesh).
