AIZAWL: Mizoram's Chief Minister and President of the Mizo National Front (MNF), Zoramthanga, declared on Friday that a favorable "wave" is building in support of the ruling party as the assembly elections approach. He delivered these remarks during the MNF's campaign kickoff event held in Lunglei town in south Mizoram.

Addressing party workers, Zoramthanga expressed confidence in the MNF's ability to retain power, asserting that the party's influence has been steadily growing over the past few months, with a discernible wave in its favour.

He stated, "There are people who pray more than us that the MNF retains power." Zoramthanga also emphasized that his party stands for the unity of all Zo ethnic tribes, regardless of their place of residence, and works toward their well-being.

In addition, he mentioned that the MNF government has raised objections to the Centre's directive to deport refugees from Myanmar and Bangladesh. Regarding the state's financial situation, where Zoramthanga also serves as the Finance Minister, he noted that Mizoram has been significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This impact has hindered the expedited execution of development projects as planned. He further explained that Mizoram has not received its share of taxes and grants from the Centre, and its own tax collections have been lower due to the pandemic.

Despite these financial constraints and various challenges, Zoramthanga emphasized that development projects have not been halted. He also pointed out that the state is currently hosting over 50,000 refugees and internally displaced people from Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Manipur.

Meanwhile, Mizoram's political parties are collectively urging the Election Commission to reconsider the counting date, which is presently set for December 3. This date has drawn criticism as it falls on a Sunday, an important day of worship for Christians. As of now, the Election Commission has not made a decision regarding this request.
