Mizoram: Death Toll Rises to 8 in the Turial Accident

A loaded fuel tanker overturned and caught fire leading to the complete damage of a taxi and 3 two-wheelers.

AIZAWL: A major road accident had taken place in the Turial region near the capital of Mizoram leading to the death of several people on the spot and left a few more people severely injured.

The accident took place at around 3 PM on the afternoon of October 29. A loaded oil tanker transporting 22000 liters of petrol overturned on National Highway Number 6 in the Turial region. It is located near the capital city of Aizawl. The accident led to the highly combustible fuel leaking from the tanker. It later caught fire and exploded violently at around 6 PM in the evening, causing a raging inferno.

Meanwhile passing motorists and locals started to collect the fuel which was leaking from the tanker. These people came under the direct blunt force of the inferno. Four people died on the spot due to severe burns. Another seventeen people suffered burn injuries and were admitted for medical supervision.

Out of the seventeen people, a 37 years old man who received 100 per cent burns in the accident died on November 3. On the same day another man with 80 per cent burns also passed away. He was 41 years old at the time of death. The next victim to succumb to the burn injuries was 23 years old, who passed away on November 4. Another 25 year old man died on Sunday while undergoing treatments at the Zoram Medical College (ZMC). He is said to have belonged to the Thingsul Tlangnuam village of Mizoram, which is located about 70 km from the capital city. This brought the total death toll to eight as of Sunday. According to reports, this number may increase further as a large number of victims under medical supervision are still in very serious condition.

Investigations regarding the accident are still underway as per the Mizoram Police. Police expressed their suspicions about someone lighting a cigarette near the accident site leading to the massive fire. The fire gutted a taxi and three two-wheelers.
