AIZAWL: The electoral roll from the state of Mizoram has lost a significant number of names as over 6000 Bru voters have been removed from the list. These names were deleted as these voters have been relocated to the neighbouring state of Tripura as per a decision taken in 2020. The officials mentioned this detail on Wednesday.
According to reports, over 6000 names of Bru voters have been removed from nine assembly constituencies falling under three districts of the state. These districts are Mamit, Kolasib and Lunglei.
More than 4900 names were deleted from three assembly constituencies of the state namely Mamit, Dampa and Hachhek in the Mamit district. In the Kolasib district, 948 names have been removed from the electoral rolls of the Kolasib, Serlui and Tuirial constituencies of the state. In the Lunglei district, 334 names were removed from the electoral rolls of the Lunglei South, Thorang and West Tuipui assembly constituencies.
The officials however mentioned that the exact number of names that have been removed from the electoral rolls will be known only when the draft electoral rolls are published on August 2. Once the draft is verified, the revised electoral roll will be finally published on October 4.
The action of the deletion of the names of the Bru voters from the state electoral rolls was initiated after Madhup Vyas took over as the Chief Electoral Officer for the state of Mizoram. After several years of conflict and insurgency, the state governments of Mizoram and Tripura in the presence of representatives of the central government and those from several Bru organisations came together to sign an agreement. This agreement made way for over 35000 Bru tribals displaced from different parts of Mizoram to be re-settled permanently on different parts of Tripura.
