AIZAWL: In the state of Mizoram, the electoral process for the upcoming assembly elections has kicked off with a special focus on ensuring accessibility and participation for the most vulnerable segments of the population. Postal ballot voting has been initiated, specifically targeting senior citizens aged 80 years and above and individuals with disabilities (PwDs). This inclusive approach to voting is a significant step in the state's democratic process.
The commencement of postal ballot voting took place in three assembly constituencies located in the Serchhip district of Mizoram. In this pioneering initiative, six polling parties, led by presiding officers, polling officers, and dedicated security personnel, went door-to-door to reach out to eligible voters within their homes. These parties facilitated the electoral process, ensuring that senior citizens and PwDs could exercise their voting rights conveniently and securely.
In total, the home voting facility will be made available to a substantial number of 2092 senior citizens and individuals with disabilities across 40 assembly constituencies in Mizoram. This widespread coverage reflects the state's commitment to making the electoral process as inclusive and accessible as possible, promoting equal participation in the democratic decision-making process.
This innovative approach recognizes the challenges faced by senior citizens and PwDs when it comes to traditional in-person voting.
