MNF, ZPM, BJP and Congress to Contest for the Lunglei Municipal Council

AIZAWL: Preparations are in a full swing for the elections for the Lunglei Municipal Council. The voting will take place on March 29 and several political parties have already released the lists of their chosen candidates.

The ruling Mizo National Front, opposition Zoram People’s Movement, Bharatiya Janata Party and Indian National Congress parties are contesting in the Lunglei Municipal Council polls. According to the local reports, all the parties have decided to contest the elections on their own and no alliances have been formed.

Congress party released their list of candidates on Wednesday, while the Mizo National Front, Zoram People’s Movement and Bharatiya Janata Party announced their candidates on Thursday for all the 11 seats of the council.

The vice-president of the Mizo National Front, Lalthlengliana announced the names of candidates of his party. He expressed confidence about winning in this election. He also claimed that the contesting members of the Mizo National Front are more efficient than the candidates put forward by the opposition parties. He also added that the Indian National Congress is no longer a threat to the Mizo National Front and that the Zoram People’s Movement wave exists only in the theory.

The working president of the Zoram People’s Movement, K Sapdanga also expressed confidence about winning in the elections. He mentioned that they will win as their party’s priority is fighting corruption.

The state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, R. Vanramchhuanga mentioned that their list of the 11 candidates was approved by the national president of the party, Jagat Prakash Nadda.

The submission of nominations came to a close at 3 PM on March 10. The last day for withdrawing nominations is March 14. Voting takes place on March 29 and countings will take place on April 3.

Lunglei is the second largest town in the state, after the state capital Aizawl. It was created in 2022 and is Lunglei Municipal Council is the second largest in the state after Aizawl Municipal Corporation.
