Smuggled areca nuts & cigarettes worth lakhs across Mizoram

AIZAWL: In yet another success in the crusade against smuggling activities, a joint operation carried out by the Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles — under the aegis of Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) — and the Serchhip Customs Department led to the recovery of 68 cases of foreign-origin smuggled cigarettes in the Champhai area of Mizoram on April 10.

The operation was carried out based on specific information. The approximate market value of the recovered foreign-origin smuggled cigarettes is Rs 88,40,000. The Champhai Customs Preventive Force seized the contraband item, and also detained an individual in this regard.

ARECA NUTS SEIZED: A joint operation of the Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles, under the aegis of Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), and Customs Preventive Force of Champhai District led to the recovery of 72 bags of areca nuts from the general area of Chhungte on April 11 .The operation was based on specific information.

The approximate market value of the recovered areca nuts is Rs 16,12,800. The Customs Preventive Force (CPF) of Champhai District seized the contraband items and also detained an individual.

In another operation, 395 bags of areca nuts were recovered in the Vaphai area on April 18.The approximate cost of the recovered areca nuts is Rs 74,18,100. The Customs Preventive Customs Preventive Force Champhai District seized the contraband items. They also detained one individuals.

Meanwhile, 150 bags of areca nuts were recovered from Melbuk on April 19. The approximate market value of the items is Rs 37,56,000. The Champhai CPF seized the contraband items.

The ongoing smuggling of drugs and various items is a major cause of concern along the India-Myanmar Border and especially for Mizoram. The Assam Rifles, also christened as the'Sentinels of Northeast' have continued their efforts against the smuggling activities in Mizoram, stated a release.
