Nagaland Elections: Section 144 Enforced in Wokha

KOHIMA: With just two days of campaigning remaining ahead of the assembly elections for the state of Nagaland, the Indian prime minister is all set to take part in an election rally in the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to take part in an election rally in Chumoukedima district on February 24 as a part of the election campaigning for the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party pre-poll alliance in the state. The total seats were divided on a 40:20 basis with The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party posting their candidates for 40 seats and Bharatiya Janata Party for 20 seats. One of the candidates of the Bharatiya Janata Party has already been declared the winner because of the lack of any competitors in his constituency.

Multiple incidents of violence have also been reported from the Wokha district of the state ahead of the prime minister’s visit to the state for campaigning. Keeping view of the safety measures in the Tyui and Wokha legislative assembly constituencies, the local authorities have enforced Section 144 of the region till the evening of March 3 when the counting of the votes will be over. This order prohibits the assembly of more than 4 people in any location as well as the movement of non-essential vehicles.

The deputy commissioner of the Wokha District of Nagaland, Ajit Kumar Ranjan mentioned, “Three sporadic incidents of confrontation between two groups was reported at Wokha Town. Security forces responded immediately with force and brought the situation under control within 10-15 minutes. Six persons have been detained and further investigation is going on. All those involved shall be dealt strictly under law. Situation in Wokha remains under control with security forces fully deployed in the area." Ajit Kumar Ranjan also handles the duty of the district election officer for the assembly polls.

"As a precautionary measure for the maintenance of peace, partial restrictions on assembly of five or more and non-essential vehicle movement has been imposed from 5 pm to 5 am. The campaign activities shall continue with RO permission in accordance with MCC guidelines w/o restriction," Ajit Kumar Ranjan tweeted
