KOHIMA: The chief of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, Neiphiu Rio handed over his resignation as the chief minister of the previous term of the Nagaland Assembly to the governor of the state, La Ganesan. He also put forward the claims to form the new Nagaland Government.
The National Democratic Progressive Party had managed to grab 25 seats out of the 60 seats in the state assembly while the Bharatiya Janata Party managed to take 12 seats. That brought the total number of seats of the pre-poll alliance partners National Democratic Progressive Party and the Bharatiya Janata Paty to 37, which is 6 more than the requisite number of 31 seats in the state assembly to form the government as per the data by the Election Commission of India after the counting of votes was completed on March 2.
With the lack of anyone else to contest his claims to the position of the chief minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio is all set to take the position and become the longest-serving chief minister of the state.
This year’s record was however the election of two female candidates to the state assembly by the public of the state. This is the first time since the formation of Nagaland that the state assembly will see the presence of female legislators. The two women lawmakers - Hekhani Jakhalu and Salhoutuonuo Kruse of the ruling NDPP defeated the sitting MLAs in Western Angami and Dimapur-III seats respectively.
The Neiphiu Rio-led state government of Nagaland is ready to take oath in the coming week. According to a statement made by the chief minister of Assam, the states of Assam and Meghalaya will see the swearing-in of the Chief ministers and cabinet ministers on March 7 while the same will be organised on March 8 for Tripura.
