GUWAHATI : Governments of northeastern states are in an extreme rush to fulfill their quota for providing shelter to the rural poor before the deadline expires. The targeted time is now set till March 2024 under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G).
Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, the Union Minister of state for rural development, in a written reply in Lok Sabha mentioned about the current status of the scheme. Among the 2.49 crore houses sanctioned by several states and Union territories, 85% of it has been completed till now.
However, 50-80% of the sanctioned houses in northeast is still not completed. Initially, the deadline assigned by PMAY-G was 2022 but now it has been extended till 2024, March. The construction of pucca houses with the basic facilities started from 1st of April 2016 all over the nation, under the scheme.
The scheme has defined the size of particular house to be 25 square meter. An area for hygienic cooking is also included in the total measurement.
Tripura has done an excellent job by completing construction of 79.77% of the total 2.49 lakh sanctioned houses under PMAY-G.
However Meghalaya and Manipur reportedly completed 52.68% and 50.66% of the total sanctioned houses till 7th of December, 2022. 65,155 houses were sanctioned in Meghalaya and 36,454 houses in Manipur.
In the bottom stands Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, as they have only completed 23.42% and 27.28% respectively. Out of 18,373 houses, Mizoram has completed 6,167 of the sanctioned houses. Assam has sanctioned the highest number of pucca houses under the scheme.
Out of the total 14,57,835 houses, less than half the construction has been done. Assam government has achieved the target of 7,03,332 houses till now. The statement also mentioned that, the targets under PMAY-G are decided every year on the basis of various factors.
These includes evaluation of available and eligible beneficiaries and discussion with the States and Union Territories.
