GUWAHATI: After almost two weeks of unbearable heat, the Indian Meteorological Department has predicted rainfall in many parts of Northeast India which is expected to give some respite to the people of the region.
The region has reported a massive deficit of rainfall in the past few months leading to severe heat and dust-related problems, mainly in the capital city. The showers for short durations on Tuesday and Wednesday did not give any relief from the heat but definitely brought down the dust and particulate matter in the atmosphere. With the heavy rains predicted over the coming weekend, the citizens are now expecting some relief from the heat as well.
Isolated showers are expected in a number of areas with snow in the higher stretches of the region. Localised thunderstorms are also predicted for some of the areas.
Heavy rains from 64.5 mm-115.5 mm have been predicted to lash Arunachal Pradesh between Thursday and Saturday. Assam and Meghalaya can also expect rains on Friday and Saturday according to reports. Light to moderate-intensity showers accompanied by occasional thunderstorms and wind gusts are also expected in the region in the coming five days.
The states of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are expected to receive isolated showers on Thursday and widespread rains and thunderstorms on Friday according to the report.
The northeastern states have received deficient rainfall in recent times because of weather changes. Arunachal Pradesh recorded only 57.8 mm between April 1 and 19, which is considered 69% deficient for the time frame if compared with the long-time average. Similarly, Assam and Meghalaya received 51% and 47% deficient rainfall over the past few days.
