GANGTOK: The assembly polls are still one year away but the political leaders of the Northeastern state of Sikkim seem to have started their preparations well ahead of the polls as several members of the Sikkim Democratic Front have allegedly resigned from the party.

According to reports from the state, as many as 21 senior members of the Sikkim Democratic Front have resigned from the party.

The senior member of the Sikkim Democratic Front and former Member of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, Chandra M Subba is also among those who have resigned. Apart from these 21 leaders, other members of the party from the Yumthang Constituency also tendered their resignations.

Chandra M Subba cited personal reasons as the cause of this resignation as they handed over the papers to the former chief minister of the state, Pawan Chamling.

These leaders had reportedly met with the current Chief Minister of the state, Prem Singh Tamang in Gangtok after their resignation. Ant this raised speculations of them joining the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha.

The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha and the Bharatiya Janata Party coalition is in power in this small Northeastern state. The Sikkim Democratic Front forms the opposition in the state. Sikkim goes to the election in March or April 2024 for its 32-member state assembly. It may be conducted just ahead of the general elections which are scheduled for the month of April 2023.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has an ample number of seats to form the government by itself in the state of Tripura, while will do the same with their local alliance partner, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party in the state of Nagaland. While the National People’s Party has the majority of seats in the Meghalaya assembly, it is not yet sure if they will form the state government as Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Sangma had mentioned that the rest of the MLA are against the NPP and BJP.
