GANGTOK: Two construction workers perished owing to a mud slip at the Ropeway construction site in west Sikkim last week, while another worker perished at a construction site due to a falling boulder in Syari, close to Gangtok, the day before yesterday (January 4).
The incident was discovered when a dead body was transported to Manipal Hospital Tadong following a call book alert. The dead has been identified as Basant Tamang, a resident of Syari, Gangtok, who is 45 years old. On January 3 at around 09:08, he was delivered dead to the Emergency Room of the aforementioned hospital, Tadong.
Following further investigation, it was discovered that on January 3, around 8 AM, the deceased was working alongside his coworkers Suresh Tamang, Aitey Maya Tamang, and Kavita for evacuation work, specifically to cut and fill soils at a construction site owned by one Krishna Kumar Pradhan in Zimpong Gaon, Middle Syari, Gangtok, Sikkim.
The deceased was allegedly trying to remove a boulder while working beneath it. He suffered a serious head injury when the same boulder suddenly collapsed on top of him. After being evacuated, he was sent to CRH, Manipal, where the on-duty MO pronounced him dead. A ropeway wall that was still being built collapsed in Pelling, West Sikkim, earlier on December 31, killing at least two workers.
Five employees were working on a barrier wall at the Ropeway construction site in Pelling when mudslides suddenly happened. Three workmen were able to escape the mudslide after it occurred, but two others who were buried in the mound perished instantly.
District Hospital Gyalshing performed the postmortem on the deceased, and after that, the lifeless corpse of the deceased was given to their guardian in accordance with the correct protocol. For better medical care, Sambad Ray and Basanta Roy, the other two employees, were directed to a higher center.
