GANGTOK: On the second day of her visit, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman described Sikkim as "understated," with a modest concentration on the welfare of its residents and the nation.

The Finance Minister met several Sikkim businesses that had put up special shops for her earlier in the day while strolling down the MG Marg.

Sitharaman complimented Sikkim during her speech to the audience for its understated but significant efforts to improve the lives of its citizens. She claimed that Sikkim is an understated state where a lot of work is being done covertly without making a fuss.

“I observed a lot of locally owned small businesses that are focused on serving the needs of the community and do not care where the raw materials are sourced. The outstanding products on exhibit are a direct result of these businesses producing their own raw materials”, stated the minister.

The Finance Minister virtually opened a 3.5-kilometer-long ropeway in Yangon's Namchi area during her visit, which runs from Dhapper to Bhaleydhunga. The 3154-meter-high ropeway was constructed for Rs 209.57 crore, including Rs 57.82 crore in gap funding supplied by the PM DevINE programme.

Subsequently, Sitharaman took part in a NABARD outreach event that was attended by the chief minister, Prem Singh Golay, as well as other dignitaries and authorities.

Sitharaman also lauded the state's high proportion of female entrepreneurs and self-help organisations. "I noted that Sikkim has a substantial amount of female participation in economic endeavours and self-help groups, which is admirable," she remarked.

“This year's budget puts more of an emphasis on helping self-help organisations and businesses run by women. To assure the quality of their goods and services, they are allowed to sell, brand, and manage accounts. All conceivable support for female business owners will be included in the budget”, the minister added.

During the outreach programme, the finance minister also went into great depth regarding the various NABARD financial aid programmes and plan offerings. She gave out NABARD checks to various business endeavours and entrepreneurs throughout the state.

Also, during her visit, Sitharaman virtually laid the cornerstone for the Mini Secretariat and Niyukti Bhawan at Lumsey in Gangtok.
