Uttarey: Often been called as the 'Traveller's Paradise,' Sikkim opens Uttarey, the gateway for Singalila and Phoktey Dara treks for tourists.

Earlier as the local panchayats and stakeholders of Maneybong-Uttarey GPU imposed a ban on the entry of tourists from October 1, as the Sikkim government went ahead with reopening of tourism from October 10. Due to the fear of COVID 19, they decided on not reopening the area for the tourists.

A meeting was held on October 12 at Uttarey, which is about 37 km away from Geyzing, West Sikkim's district headquarters. The coordination meeting saw the withdrawal of the ban imposed by the local panchayats and tourism stakeholders.

Uttarey is 10 km away from the Indo-Nepal border, Chewabhanjyang. It is famous for trekking, as one can reach Maneybhanjyang in Darjeeling from Uttarey via Singalila trek.

The pandemic has caused problems to the state's population which is mostly dependent on the tourism sector. With the reopening of tourism, the state hopes to recover the losses due to the coronavirus outbreak.
