Accusations of Political Violence in Tripura Civic Elections by BJP Claims TMC and TIPRA

The Tripura unit of Trinamool Congress appealed to the State Election Commission, alleging that Bhartiya Janta party workers rigged the Tripura civic election that is going on

AGARTALA: Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and other municipal bodies in Tripura are currently commencing the civic elections and a total of 785 candidates are in a fray.

However The TMC had identified over 20 concerns of EVM malfunction and violence by BJP workers since morning, but just two of them had been repaired so far, it said to the State Election Commission in an e-mail. It further stated that authorities' phone numbers are inaccessible.

"Repeated calls to the SP, the local police station OC, and the returning officers on the official lines provided have gone unanswered due to their unavailability."

Supreme Court directed the centre to send two more companies of the central Armed forces to Tripura where civic elections are going on, According to the Trinamool Congress, the Bhartiya Janta Party are stopping the voters to cast their respective votes.

They claimed that a party worker was beaten up in ward number 5 in Agartala, the state capital. However, the police could not confirm any untoward incidents. Communist Party of India (Marxist) state secretary Jiten Chaudhary also alleged that the ruling party was indulging in voter intimidation in the South Tripura district and obstructing party workers from functioning freely. However, all the allegations are denied by the ruling party BJP.

BJP leader and former Tripura health minister Sudip Roy Barman has also confirmed incidents of violence during polling for the civic bodies. "Incidents of violence has come to my notice in different areas. This is not good for democracy," BJP MLA Sudip Roy Barman said while briefing the media in Agartala.

"Violence happening in Vijay Kumar choumohqni where Tipra Motha workers are being attacked by BJP workers," tweeted Pradyot Debbarman.

Tripura holds elections for the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and 13 other town civic bodies on Thursday. After 36 candidates withdrew their candidacy, a total of 785 individuals are vying for the remaining 222 seats.

In total, 334 seats are available in urban local bodies across the state, including the Agartala Municipal Corporation (51 wards), 13 Municipal Councils, and six Nagar Panchayats. The ruling BJP, which has fielded candidates in all seats in Tripura civic elections, has already won 112 out of the total 334 seats uncontested in the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and 19 urban bodies.
