Agartala: Five persons have been arrested by the Tripura Police for allegedly attacking an on-duty Block Development Officer of the Poangbari Rural Development.

The accused were produced before the court on Thursday and have been ordered to remain under judicial custody till September 27.

A survey was conducted, as per the 2011 census, to build government houses in the Madhabnagar gram panchayat in the Poangbari RD Block. A total of 240 people were chosen as suitable for housing through the process of geo-tagging. The Block Development Officer, Vijayant Sarkar, had started distributing the houses after following all the rules.

However, this decision was objected to by the leaders of the village panchayat who suggested that it should be reviewed in another way. The BDO rejected their suggestion and this resulted in causing tensions between the two parties.

The village panchayat leaders cancelled the previous list and tried to pressure the BDO to make a new list. The BDO did not pay any heed to their words and carried on working with the original list.

However, the BDO was later attacked by miscreants along with his employees on Wednesday. His mobile phone had been snatched away from him and his clothes had been torn off. An organisation of about 30-40 people attacked the BDO and other employees of the government.

Sabroom sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Debdas Debbarma and Sub-divisional Police Officer Lalhim Molsom soon reached the site of the incident along with the police somehow managed to rescue BDO Vijayant Sarkar.

The district magistrate was informed by Vijayant Sarkar in writing and the miscreants were arrested in a matter of 24 hours by the Tripura Police.
