AGARTALA: A huge consignment of cannabis weighing around 300 kgs was seized from a truck stopped during a routine search operation conducted at the inter-state border between Assam and Tripura, police officials informed.
The officials stated that a routine ‘naka’ checkpoint had been set up on the highway at Churaibari village along the Assam-Tripura state border. During this routine checking operation, Tripura police officials stopped a truck and conducted a search during which they managed to unearth and seize the cannabis consignment.
Initial reports suggested that the police checking had led to the discovery of a hidden compartment in which the contraband had been concealed in the truck.
According to the officials, the seized cannabis consignment was weighed to be around 300 kilograms in total. The value of the seized cannabis was estimated by officials to be worth around Rs 40 lakhs in the illicit drug markets.
On discovery of the contraband, the officials immediately arrested the driver of the truck, who was identified as one Radheshyam Dubey, on charges of smuggling the contraband drugs.
During his interrogation, it was revealed by Dubey that the consignment was being transported from Agartala to other states through the Assam route.
Last month, the Tripura Police made yet another successful crackdown on drug trafficking, when they reportedly seized a substantial quantity of ganja (cannabis) from a truck during the wee hours of July 6.
The police authorities, acting on a confidential tip-off, intercepted a truck headed to Assam’s Silchar from Agartala and unearthed 62 packages which contained 337 kilograms of ganja.
According to the sources, the seized contraband was estimated to be worth around Rs 50 lakh. This dealt a significant blow to the illicit drug trade being conducted in the region.
After the incident unfolded, the truck's driver, identified as Zakir Hussain, was promptly arrested.
In the first week of June this year, making another breakthrough in their continuing intensified drive against the criminal elements, Darrang Police seized 170 kilograms of contraband ganja and arrested three smugglers in this connection.
Acting as per the instruction of Superintendent of Police Prakash Sonowal, a joint team of Dalgaon and Kharupetia Police, led by both the Officer in Charge Inspector Manoranjan Gogoi and Inspector Rajib Barua conducted a raid, after receiving tip-off, at Jangalgaon village of Besimari under Dalgaon Police Station on Friday night and seized the ganja contained in nine bags and arrested the smugglers under the provisions of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance (NDPS) Act.
