House of senior scribe 'vandalised' in Agartala

AGARTALA: Expressing serious concern over the attack on the house of the national secretary of the National Union of Journalists (India) -- NUJ (I)-- at Agartala, several journalists' organizations have demanded an immediate high-level judicial inquiry into the incident.

In a shocking incident, more than 100 miscreants allegedly barged into the house of senior journalist Prasantha Charkavarti -- who is also the general decretary of Tripura Union of Working Journalists (TUWJ) -- and vandalised the entire house. Charkavarti was not present at the house; the culprits reportedly manhandled his brother and sister and left them in a shaky condition.

NUJ (I) president Ras Bihari and vice president Bhupen Goswami (East Zone) said that the attack shows that everything is not going well in Tripura; and demanded an immediate high-level judicial probe and action, stated a release.

Ras Bihari further said that the NUJ demands justice to the scribe and also appropriate compensation from the State government. NUJ (I) will also complain about this whole episode to the Prime Minister, Home Minister and Governor, he said and also demanded that the Union and the State governments must ensure the safety of scribes.

Meanwhile, the North East Journalists Welfare Foundation and the Journalists Association of Assam (JAA) have also demanded immediate action and high-level judicial inquiry.
