AGARTALA: The situation in Kanchanpur, a sub-division in North Tripura district bordering Mizoram is gradually getting tense over the proposed rehabilitation of the Reang refugees. The Kanchanpur Nagarik Suraksha Manch, an organisation dominated by local Bengalis, first opposed the move; and now the Mizo residents of Jampui Hills also joined them. This issue might witness a vigorous agitation in the coming days. After holding a joint meeting on Saturday, both the organizations submitted a memorandum to Sub-Divisional Magistrate Chandni Chandran. The memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister opposed any move to rehabilitate the Reang refugees in Kanchanpur.

Dhaneswar Nath, Gautam Das and Anup Nath of Nagarik Suraksha Manch and the president of Jampui Hills Mizo Convention David Ralte and its secretary Jirlem Miyama have apprehended that the pattern of the proposed rehabilitation might create communal tension in the area.
