AGARTALA: Dr Manik Saha took oath as the Chief Minister of Tripura for the second time on Wednesday as the Bharatiya Janata Party formed the government for the second consecutive term in the state.
The swearing-in ceremony held a the Vivekananda Maidan of Agartala saw the presence of a large number of people including political leaders as well as supporters gathered at the venue to take part in the celebrations.
The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi and the Union Home Minister Amit Shah also attended the 2nd swearing in of Dr Manik Saha along with the National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party Jagat Prakash Nadda.
Several other elected members of the party also took oaths and charges of different departments of the state on Wednesday. Some of them include Ratan Lal Nath, Pranjit Singha Roy, Santana Chakma, Sushanta Chowdhury, Tinku Roy, Bikas Debbarma, Sudhangshu Das and Shukla Charan Noatia.
69 years old Dr Manik Shah is a dental surgeon by education and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2016 after quitting from the Congress party. He was honoured with a lifetime achievement award for his contribution to dental surgery by the Indian Dental Association and Tripura government. He replaced Biplab Kumar Deb as the chief minister during the previous term of the Bharatiya Janata Party following charges of corruption against him.
The Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) which had formed an alliance in the state ahead of the polls, but failed to leave in the recently concluded election for the state assembly.
The Bharatiya Janata Party managed to bag 32 seats out of the total 60 to claim the majority and form the government. TIPRA Motha Party which participated in the elections for the first time, managed to form the opposition in the house with a total number of 13 seats to their name.
