Agartala: Local inhabitants of Kanchanpur, both tribals and Bengalis, are scared over the government’s move to rehabilitate over 35.000 Reang refugees coming from Mizoram in this sub-division as it will “disturb the population balance” of the area. Even the people who earlier got patta are also afraid that they may lose their land.
A recent memorandum issued by Kanchanpur Sub-divisional administration indicated that about 15,000 refugees have been given rehabilitation in three ADC villages under Dasda and Laljury blocks. Out of them, 300 families will be rehabilitated in Mitrajoy Para under Kanchancherra Mouja, 400 families at Dakarcherra of Manu-Chailengta, 450 families at Casco Para and 800 families at Harsing Para.
Leaders of the Kanchanpur Nagarik Suraksha Samiti leaders expressed grave concern and alleged that the government has violated its commitment. After signing the accord regarding rehabilitation of the Reang refugees, the government said they will be distributed throughout the State and not imposing the entire burden on Kanchanpur alone.
