AGARTALA: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has demanded a judicial inquiry in connection with the custodial death of a suspected dacoit in Sipahijala district of Tripura.

A suspected dacoit identified as Jamal Hussain (35), who was arrested on the charges of robbery and smuggling of drugs, died at Sonamura police station on Wednesday.

Speaking about this, TMC leader Subal Bhowmick said the matter is related with custodial death and a judicial probe should be conducted so that all the details regarding the incident come to light.

He stressed that a sitting high court judge should look into the matter and those responsible for the death in police custody should be booked as per law at the earliest.

The deceased man's family members alleged that police tortured him brutally and killed him later. Jamal's sister Ajufa Khatun leveled the allegation and demanded justice. A high-level investigation should be carried out to excavate all the hidden facts related to the incident, she added.

A senior official B.B. Das said Jamal suffered from severe chest pain around 2am after which he was taken to a local hospital. Considering his health condition, he was referred to be taken to another hospital. Accordingly, he was taken to another hospital from which he was released after treatment.
