AGARTALA: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha is scheduled to officiate the inaugural journey of the Lokmanya Tilak Express bound for Mumbai from Agartala railway station on October 15, as confirmed by an official statement on Wednesday.

The Lokmanya Tilak-Kamakhya Express, which traditionally operated between Guwahati and Mumbai, will now extend its route from Agartala to Mumbai, commencing October 15, according to the official source.

A three-member delegation from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), led by General Manager Chetan Kumar Srivastava, met with the Chief Minister on Tuesday, extending an invitation for the inaugural flag-off of the Mumbai-bound Lokmanya Tilak Express, as revealed by Tripura's Transport Secretary, UK Chakma.

In addition to this notable event, Chief Minister Manik Saha will also inaugurate a new Demu train route from Agartala to Sabroom, situated in South Tripura district, on the same day. Furthermore, the Chief Minister is expected to preside over the unveiling of a newly installed escalator at the Agartala railway station.

Transport Secretary Chakma disclosed that the NFR delegation apprised the Chief Minister of the railway's goal to extend the Kanchanjunga Express route up to Sabroom by November. He further detailed that the electrification work is anticipated to be completed up to Sabroom by March 2024.

During the meeting, the state's Chief Minister Saha conveyed his request to the NFR team, urging an increase in intercity train services between Agartala and Guwahati. Additionally, he emphasized the expeditious execution of the Agartala-Gangasagar railway project, as it holds the promise of facilitating unrestricted movement from Agartala to Kolkata through Dhaka.

Preceding this engagement, it is worth mentioning here in this context that the Northeastern Frontier Railway delegation embarked on a visit to Sabroom railway station in South Tripura district to evaluate the existing facilities and services in preparation for the anticipated extension of the Kanchanjunga Express route to the southern-most border town of the state.
