AGARTALA: Tripura's Opposition Congress has called a 12-hour shutdown on Monday to protest against the alleged attack on State party president Pijush Biswas. The ruling BJP condemned the attack and urged the Congress to call off its agitation.

Tripura vice president of Congress Tapas Dey said that BJP workers, accompanied by ''notorious goons in presence of police'', attacked Biswas in Bishalgarh in Sepehijala district late Saturday evening. ''While the State party chief narrowly escaped, several party workers were injured. To protest the BJP attack on the State party chief, we have called a State-wide 12-hour shutdown on Monday,'' Dey, accompanied by party's State general secretaries H Bhowmik, B Chakraborty and T Das, told the media. They added that though FIR was lodged on Saturday night immediately after the attack yet the police has not taken any step to arrest the attackers.

Meanwhile, BJP's State chief spokesman SubrataChakraborty demanded an impartial inquiry. ''We urge the police to take appropriate legal action against the attackers. The probe would reveal whether it is an attack or outcome of the Congress' internal feud. The Congress also must withdraw the strike call as it would hinder the peace and progress undertaken by the government,'' he said. (IANS)
