AGARTALA: In the early hours of Monday, a massive fire broke out in the Battala Market in Agartala, Tripura, destroying about 155 stores in the market. The incident caused major damage to Tripura's second busiest and largest market, the Battala Market.
Battala Market Association Secretary Subhas Das speculated that an electrical short circuit was most likely the cause of the fire. To stop the fire from spreading further, quick action was taken and nine fire tenders were dispatched to the scene and the Fire and Emergency Services were informed. He also went into detail about the extent of the damage, noting that out of the impacted businesses, there were 130 vegetable vendors, 5 chicken shops, 5 wholesale outlets, and 15 grocery stores. It is anticipated that the loss will be more than Rs 2 crore.
Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder and Chief Minister Manik Saha visited the site to assess the situation and speak with the affected traders. After taking stock of the situation, the chief minister said that it was a really regrettable incident as a large part of the Battala Market was gutted causing huge losses for many of the businessmen.
The chief minister mentioned that a comprehensive assessment will be conducted to find the precise amount for the losses and he mentioned that the details will be discussed with the Additional District Magistrate. He mentioned that the fire was successfully contained as the fire tenders arrived in time. He also thanked the firefighters and the local people for taking immediate action to control the blaze.
The chief minister also mentioned that officials will be looking into the situation and look into ways to help the victims. “In order to guarantee the victims receive immediate support, I have also spoken with the Mayor. Our government is looking into every option to help," the chief minister said.
