Tripura: Heroin Seized From Train in Dharmanagar Railway Station

NORTH TRIPURA: The Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) conducted a joint operation and while conducting the anti-narcotics operation at the Dharmanagar railway station in the North Tripura district of Tripura recovered heroin worth several lakhs of rupees from the Silchar-Agartala passenger train on Sunday.

While a total of 77 grams of heroin in six packets was recovered from a market bag inside a coach of the train, no arrests have been made by the security agencies so far.

The officer in charge of the Dharmanagar unit of GRPS Uttam Kumar Kalai told the media that the success came up during a routine search and they have taken up the case and started an investigation into the incident.

The heroin was later handed over to the Dharmanagar District and Sessions Court.

Meanwhile, a major consignment of narcotics was also captured in the neighbouring state of Manipur, Assam Rifles, along with the Excise and Narcotics Department, arrested four individuals and recovered heroin worth Rs 4.82 crore from Champhai district in three separate operations, according to an official statement on Monday. “In yet another success in its crusade against smuggling activities, Assam Rifles, under the aegis of Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), recovered heroin (weighing 689.52 grams) worth Rs 4.82 crore in the general areas of Chhungte and Zote, Champhai district, on September 23–24, 2023, in three separate operations,” read a statement from Assam Rifles.

The operations were carried out by combined teams of Assam Rifles and Excise and Narcotics Department Champhai based on specific information. During the operation, four individuals were also arrested, it added. The apprehended individuals and the entire consignment of heroin have been handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department of Champhai for further legal proceedings, it said.
