AGARTALA: A suspected cattle smuggler was shot dead by border guards in the state of Tripura on Sunday night leading to a situation of unrest in the region.

The deceased was identified as 48-year-old Alamgir Hussain, The incident took place late Sunday night at the Durgapur Indo-Bangla border in Sonamura and the local people of the region created unrest soon after they came to know about the incident.

According to reports, this border area has not been fenced with barbed wire yet. The area is still known as the free zone for international smugglers. A similar group of smugglers were thought to be smuggling cattle through the area late on Sunday night and the 133rd Battalion of the Border Guard Force tried to stop them. It was mentioned that the smugglers attacked the BSF personnel and they fired in retaliation but the rest of the smugglers managed to flee.

The victim was shifted to the Sonamura Social Health Center but doctors on duty pronounced him dead on arrival. On the other hand, his family members claim that Alamgir's activities are not related to smuggling and there are many people who have been shot dead by soldiers during the operations carried out at the Durgapur border.

Previously, the Assam police rescued around 20 cattle and arrested a man in an anti-smuggling operation here, officials said on Friday. According to police, the operation, which resulted in the seizure of the cattle, was conducted on Thursday night along the inter-district border between Nagaon and Karbi Anglong. In the Dalmari area of Karbi Anglong district, a vehicle transporting the cattle was stopped by the local police.

“The driver of the vehicle initially claimed that the cattle were intended for sale at the Bhoksong Market in Diphu in the Karbi Anglong district. However, there isn’t an open cow market in the Bhoksong bazaar,” the police said. Based on suspicion, the police team responded quickly and stopped the vehicle and seized the animals. Safiqul Islam, the driver of the vehicle, was arrested.
