AGARTALA: Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the leader of the Tipraha Indigenous People's Regional Alliance (TIPRA Motha), said on Tuesday that he would be leaving politics and public life.

In a video message he has stated that, “I don’t want to do politics anymore, I want to give something to the people. I have decided to give something to people and quit politics and public life…”

The main opposition group in Tripura is TIPRA Motha. A delegation from TIPRA Motha recently requested Union Home Minister Amit Shah to provide a "Constitutional solution" to their demand for "Greater Tipraland" in a meeting with him. Debbarma reported that the team received assurances from the home minister that the central government will soon begin the process of discussing the issues.

The TIPRA Motha was established in 2021 in response to the state's tribal residents' demand for a separate Greater Tipraland state.

However, the party's main demand underwent a number of changes in the intervening period, and prior to the Assembly elections earlier this year, it had already started claiming that the Greater Tipraland it envisioned would be an autonomous territory within the state of Tripura in accordance with the Constitution of India, though with a number of features like direct funding from the Centre to empower tribal development.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regained control of the Tripura Assembly by securing a majority. With a vote share of about 39%, the BJP won 32 of the 60 seats. With 13 seats, Tipra Motha Party came in second. In Tripura, it ran for 42 of the 60 seats. The Tipra Motha's proposal for "Greater Tipraland" was denied in March by Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha.
