Protest by domestic helps was held in Guwahati today demanding welfare schemes including a pension scheme and medical insurance scheme for the lakhs of domestic helps who spends hours working at peoples' home but earn very less. At times their wages do not even cover their medical and children's school bills. The protest was organized by CITU (Centre of Indian Trade Unions) and according to the protesters a policy was in the works to ensure better work atmosphere, wages and post-retirement benefits for the helps but is yet to be implemented. The protest was held outside the Labour Commissioner's office.
