The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai has been host to historic moments in Indian Cricket.

The stadium is also considered a fortress for the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise and five-time IPL Champions, the Mumbai Indians.

Here are some facts about the iconic Wankhede Stadium:

The Wankhede stadium was built in 1974 and was named after the former president of the Mumbai Cricket Association S.K Wankhede.

It has a capacity of 33,108 seats.

The first test match at the ground was played between India and West Indies from Jan 23 to 29, 1975 while the first ODI was played almost 12 years later on Jan 17, 1987.

Ravi Shastri has his name etched in Wankhede history for his swashbuckling 6-sixes in an over against Baroda in a Ranji Trophy game during the 1984-85 season.

India lifted the 2011 World Cup Trophy at the Wankhede Stadium on 2nd April, 2011 after beating Sri Lanka in the final.

Sachin Tendulkar played his last test match (also his 200th) at this historic stadium on November 14, 2013, against the West Indies.

The stadium has stands named after legendary Mumbai cricketers such as Vijay Merchant, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Sachin Tendulkar as well as notable cricket administrators like Vithal Divecha.
