1st Khelo India Women's Judo National League: Linthoi Chanambam and Tulika Maan to Lead the Roster

NEW DELHI: Linthoi Chanambam and Tulika Maan are on the top of the roster for the upcoming 1st Khelo India Women's Judo National League. The inaugural session of this sporting event will kick off on October 20.

This competition is organized under the Khelo India campaign in order to provide better exposure to female judo players as well as to increase the popularity of this sport across the country.

16-year-old Linthoi Chanambam from Manipur had won gold at the World Cadet Championship. She had defeated Brazilian player Reis Bianca in the world champions held in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia. It was the first medal in the sport and gender in a world championship.

Tulika, on the other hand, recently bagged the gold medal in women's +78kg at the 36th National Games in Gandhinagar.

496 players have been confirmed to participate in this competition. It will be held in the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi. These competitors in the Women's Judo National League were selected based on their ranking and performance within their respective zones. The Judo Federation of India is the main organizer of this competition in association with the Department of Sports, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. Women's Judo National League is set to be a national ranking tournament for women judo players from four zones of the country namely - the East, West, North, and South Zones.

The competition will be organized with 31 weight categories in place. They are divided into four age groups. They are the Sub Junior category (12-15 years), Cadet category (15-17 years), Junior category (15-20 years), and Senior category (15 years and above).

The total prize money of the competition has been mentioned as Rs. 24.43 lakhs. An amount of Rs 1.74 cr has been allocated for the overall event, mentioned a statement from the Sports Authority of India. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top seven players of each of the 31 weight categories. And the top seven players from the national selection trials and national judo tournaments will compete in the national league.
