Assam: All India School Chess Tournament Begins in Guwahati

The All India Open FIDE School Chess Tournament was flagged off in the city of Guwahati on Sunday.

GUWAHATI: In a bid to promote the game of chess among school students, a chess tournament has been flagged off in Guwahati. The tournament was flagged off by the Assam Minister of Sports and Youth Welfare, Government of Assam.

The All India Open FIDE School Chess Tournament was flagged off in the city of Guwahati on Sunday. The tournament is being hosted at the Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati. Organised by the All Assam Chess Association, this tournament has seen participants not only from Assam but also from other states of the country.

Nandita Gorlosa, the Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare, Power, Cooperation and Indigenous Tribal Faith & Culture (Archaeology) Departments for the Government of Assam attended the inaugural event on the premises of the Sarusajai Stadium on Sunday. Wishing the participants to give their best performance during the event, the minister also expressed her pleasure in seeing the large number of participants for the event, proving that young people have a great interest in chess. She also wished the participants on the occasion of Children’s Day.

The tournament has been organised in under 7, under 9, under 13 and open categories across four disciples.

It was previously announced that the SLAC All India Open FIDE Rating Chess Championship will start in Guwahati on November 14. Addressing a media gathering the president of the All Assam Chess Association Kandarpa Kalita had said that around 250 players from the different North East states along with Bengal and Delhi will participate in the five-day championship. The champion of the meet will receive a cash award of Rs 50,000 and the runners will be richer by Rs 35,000. The media briefing was also attended by the secretary of the All Assam Chess Association Rajib Dhar.
